When I stop social security payment (assuming death at a certain age), my wife's SSA payment does not go up to the level of mine prior to assumed death.
Shouldn't it?
Answer:
The rules related to Soc Sec are many and can be complicated.... the
program is not designed to set a death age of one of you and then do a bunch
of behind the scenes stuff related to that.... you have to do all of it
manually... we do this so you can be in control of making decisions about
what will happen...
Anyway in this specific case... you would stop her SS not yours.... if yours
is the higher one. The only trick is if you are not the same ages you would
need to determine the stop age based on her age since it's on her tab.
Same with any pensions... you would have to know the rules related to each
one as to whether they are 2nd to die or 1st to die pensions etc and then
set stop ages accordingly.
Does this help?
This sounds reasonable and I would have done something like it but just wanted to check to see if it was handled automatically. I’ll give it a try.
Worked fine.
Thanks
