Note: Windows 8 was not a big issue in this problem. I believe the machine was 64-bit and thus the data file conversion routine may not work properly with old data files. But it was not any system issue with registry, components, or incompatibility with Windows 8.
Originally from ticket #8977.
Bob is having some major technical issues getting the 2013 version up and running on his new computer. He keeps getting run-time errors. Donald & myslef have attempted to do a join.me screenshare with him to help but we can't seem to get it to work properly. We am having a hard time making progress on this. WP
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
I used GoTomeeting to look at his computer... we ran the program and it opened without error. But changing a value created an "overflow" error and program crashed. That is usually due to some number being too big or possibly a machine with a regional date setting that is not compatible.
Symptoms:
In this case his Retirement Income Goal and Inflation rate had really big weird numbers in them. This was an indication that the data file was corrupted. Indeed he says his tech guy installed the 2008 version and then they installed 2013... so I think in that process the file was not compatible.
SOLUTION:
Go to this location on his computer and rename or delete the data file:
Documents\Torrid Technologies\Retirement Savings Planner\defaults.dat
We then started up the program, which then creates a NEW data file.
We tested changing many values and the program now works fine without errors.
