Problem in "Other Income" Column - why does the income drop in a certain year?

Originally from ticket #18068.

I've been using RV for several years now and just love it! I have a question -- and maybe a problem -- concerning the source of data for the "Total Other Income After Taxes -- Job Income and Cash Infusions" column on the spreadsheet. Is there any place else the spreadsheet draws its information from other than JI and the Cash Infusions entry spreadsheet? I'm asking because in the projected year 2041 my total for that column suddenly takes a nosedive and I can't figure out why. My husband and I are both retired so there is no JI for either of us anymore, and the only Cash Infusion entry doesn't change (other than inflation, which should be a plus rather than a minus) from the previous year. I don't recall this as being a problem before, but it's certainly possible it was and I just didn't notice it. This is quite confusing and driving me crazy, so I'd appreciate your help. thank you!

Hi,

The Total Other Income should be driven only from Job Income and Cash Infusions.
From what you describe, we would need your data file and then could open it and see what if anythig is going on.
If you want us to look at it, replay and attach the file. It will be kept confidential.

In windows it is located here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Documents\Torrid Technologies\Retirement Savings Planner\defaults.dat

If on a mac, search for defaults.rp8 on your entire mac.

Atch'd should be the file. Since you're looking into this, let me ask another question: why is the program constantly creating and saving backup files? In looking for this one, I'm finding dozens of backups that go back for four years and appear to be created everytime I open/save the program. There are some days that have several backup versions. Yet when I try opening several to look at them, the data all seems to be the same. Would appreciate your thoughts on this too.

Thanks.

Hi Patricia,
I just took a look at your file.

1). Your question about why does other income take a nose dive in 2014. Well, the "other income" is only income that you "need". Based on your target retirement expenses, you don't need all of your "other income" in that year. I see the rental property income on Cash infusions is greater than the gap to be filled after Social Security and your Pensions. Thus, at least half of your rental income will be saved and accumulated into your Taxable investment bucket.

2). We have had on occasion bugs that would lose people's data. Or program would crash and lose data. Before we did backups, people got very angry with us. So we added this backup mechanism to save a backup every time you do a save, it saves a copy of the prior version. Hard drive space is generally cheap and plentiful and these files are very tiny in size. However, if you don't want them you are free to delete all those files any time you wish.

3). You open the data file and there is no data. Well, I would ask "how are you opening the data file" as right now we do not have a mechanism in the couples edition to open a backup data file. It would require some special magic to look at the contents. How did you "open the backup file?
